Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construct (D&C) contract for the Sentosa Seawall and Land Reclamation Project in Singapore.Resorts World are developing an integrated resort which will include six hotels, casino and a Universal Theme Park on Sentosa Island.
The world-class and pioneering resort project is set on 49 hectares and is scheduled for opening in the first quarter of 2010. MacDow's contract included the design and construction of approximately 1.1 km of seawall, the reclamation of approximately 6.4 hectares of land, and the improvement of the reclaimed fill using cement mixed piles.
To achieve the tight construction timeline, the MacDow team worked on two construction fronts to deliver the following scope of works:
- Installation of 313 vertical steel pipe piles with a diameter of 1,600 mm;
- Installation of 288 raked steel pipe piles with a diameter of 1,300 mm.
The pipe piles were drilled and socketed to a depth of approximately 12 m below seabed;
- Installation of 624 AZ36-700 sheet piles;
- Construction of 1 km of capping beam and installation of pre-cast fascia panels;
- Placement of 570,000 m3 of select fill material;
- Soil improvement works to an area of 64,000 m2;
- Construction of three piers at the marine and maritime areas;
- Protection of the existing monorail structure.
The marine work areas were restricted due to the close proximity to the regional ferry terminal, and land space was also limited due to the nature of the works.
But in true MacDow style, these challenges were overcome by the experienced site team. The team also successfully exceeded the strict environmental criteria through close monitoring of environmental protocols throughout construction.
Most importantly, the project was completed ahead of schedule and achieved over 800,000 man-hours LTI free. The performance of the project team so impressed our client they awarded MacDow the Sentosa Vehicular Bridge and Causeway project.
