Engineering Excellence Awards for St Marys Water Recycling Project, Sydney

Tagged under

The Company is pleased to announce that the St Mary’s Water Recycling Project, delivered under the Deerubbin Water Futures JV, has won two awards at the Sydney 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards announced at the Engineers Australia Sydney Division dinner on Friday night. These awards were:

• A high commendation for excellence in the Environment and Heritage Category; and
• An award finalist in the Infrastructure Projects category, as a joint submission with our client, Sydney Water.

These awards recognise the St Mary’s Water Recycling Project’s outstanding achievements in the advancement of the science and practice of engineering. St Mary’s is believed to be the world’s first large-scale project producing high-quality recycled water for the dual purposes of supporting river health and conserving drinking water.

About the St Mary’s Water Project
Deerubbin Water Futures is a joint venture between McConnell Dowell Constructors, UGL Infrastructure and GE Water and Process Technologies. The joint venture was responsible for the design and construction of the Western Sydney Recycled Water Scheme, a project designed to provide environmental flows to the Hawkesbury-Nepean River System and highly treated recycled water for industry and new homes in Sydney’s western suburbs. The JV now operates and maintains this scheme under a 10-year contract.

Major components of the work included the design and construction of an Advanced Water Treatment Plant at the St Marys Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) site for the treatment of tertiary treated effluent from Quakers Hill, Penrith and St Mary’s STPs. The works also included approximately 60 km of 300 mm to 600 mm diameter pipelines and pump stations to move effluent, discharge and recycled water throughout the scheme.

The plant produces 50 ML/day of highly treated recycled water for discharge to the Hawkesbury-Nepean River downstream of Penrith Weir, and approximately 8 ML/day of concentrate (brine generated from the treatment process) discharged to the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer (NSOOS) near Dundas.
